Catholic Bishops Assail Pelosi's Pro-Abortion Stance

Self-described "ardent and practicing Catholic" Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) apparently has no clue what the Catholic Church teaches regarding the fundamental right to life because, in truth, she is an ardent and practicing pro-abortion legislator who has a consistent anti-life record.

In a well publicized August 24 interview on "Meet the Press" Pelosi, responding to moderator Tom Brokaw, in which he recounted Barack Obama's answer to the question on when life begins, that it is "above my pay grade," said, "I don't think anybody can tell you when life begins." She said, "As an ardent and practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition . . . St. Augustine said at three months. We don't know. The point is, it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right to choose."

Palin stands by declarations on 'Bridge to Nowhere'

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska portrayed herself on Friday as part of a generation of women for whom questions about whether she can juggle a family of seven and the vice presidency — something that has been asked of her since she was named Senator John McCain’s Republican running mate — were meaningless.

    Trig's Breakthrough

Below is a Washington Post Op-Ed regarding Down syndrome and relevant to the Prenatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act (S.1810). One section of note:

“This is properly called eugenic abortion -- the ending of "imperfect" lives to remove the social, economic and emotional costs of their existence. And this practice cannot be separated from the broader social treatment of people who have disabilities. By eliminating less perfect humans, deformity and disability become more pronounced and less acceptable. Those who escape the net of screening are often viewed as mistakes or burdens. A tragic choice becomes a presumption -- "Didn't you get an amnio?" -- and then a prejudice. And this feeds a social Darwinism in which the stronger are regarded as better, the dependent are viewed as less valuable, and the weak must occasionally be culled.”

RNC for Life Praises McCain Vice Presidential Pick, Palin

St. Paul, Minnesota—The Republican National Coalition for Life (RNC/Life) praises Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain for selecting pro-life Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) as his vice presidential running mate. Palin has been the governor of Alaska since 2006. A mother of five, she recently gave birth to her fifth child, her son Trig, who was diagnosed in-utero with Down’s Syndrome. Her selection makes her the very first Republican woman to be a vice presidential candidate.

“Sarah Palin is an outstanding governor, an exemplar of all that is good and true,” said RNC for Life National Chairman Phyllis Schlafly. “She is a major leader in the pro-life movement and that is main reason we chose her as our keynote speaker for our ‘Life of the Party’ party at this year’s GOP convention.”

“John McCain has just won the election with this pick,” said RNC for Life Executive Director Colleen Parro. “Governor Palin will have wide appeal among social conservatives and pro-life Republicans.”

Parro continued, “This is the conservative outreach from the McCain campaign for which we have been hoping. We couldn’t have asked for a better VP pick.”

John McCain Will Not Change Republican Party's Pro-Life Platform on Abortion

Minneapolis, MN (LifeNews.com) -- The McCain campaign confirmed on Thursday that presidential candidate John McCain will not touch the Republican Party's platform that calls for legal protection for unborn children from abortion. In years past, McCain had wanted minor changes to allow for exceptions in cases of rape or incest.

    Contact the McCain campaign!

To Friends and Supporters of RNC/Life:

Informed sources tell us that top-level officials in the McCain campaign have been calling certain state Party chairmen to find out what they think the reaction of Republican voters would be in the event that John McCain chooses a pro-abortion-choice running mate.

Why would they do that, unless McCain is seriously considering someone like Pennsylvania’s Tom Ridge, or even a liberal Democrat like Joe Lieberman?

John McCain will be 71-years of age if he is elected President. He has had four bouts with malignant melanoma. His continued good health is to be hoped for, but should not be taken for granted. The nominee for Vice President is of the utmost importance.

At Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church last Saturday, Senator McCain declared: “I will be a pro-life President and this presidency wil have pro-life policies. That’s my commitment.” Because he has made that commitment, the expectation on the part of many pro-life and pro-family conservatives that John McCain, if elected President, would nominate pro-life judges to the federal courts and the Supreme Court, would be totally dashed if he chooses a running mate who is not pro-life.

Please contact the McCain campaign to let them know your views on this matter.

It is our position that a VP nominee who is not pro-life is unacceptable. It would be a slap in the face to the base of the Party and would most likely cost McCain and the Republican Party, the election.

Does Ann Stone Want McCain to Lose?

    Contact: Phyllis Schlafly - 314/721-1213
    Colleen Parro - 214/559-4460

    August 15, 2008

Republican fundraiser Ann Stone has resurfaced to tell the press that she is "hopeful that some tweaks will be made to platform language that deals with the hot-button issue" of abortion. "If we're successful, there will be language in that plank or elsewhere that McCain wants to take a different track in dealing with abortion."

Ms. Stone is inviting Senator John McCain down a dead end "track" to defeat, and it's unlikely that he will accept her advice since he has a consistent pro-life record. The Republican Platform has been pro-life ever since Roe v. Wade, and Republicans are too smart to subject themselves to "flip-flop" criticism.

Phyllis Schlafly, national chairman of Republican National Coalition for Life, pointed out that "in a close election, pro-life voters make the difference. If John McCain is to win in November, he must keep faith with the pro-life and pro-family base of the Party."

Republican National Coalition for Life successfully led the battle to defend the pro-life plank in the Republican Platform in the Conventions of 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and expects to do it again this year despite Ms. Stone's press releases. Senator McCain has indicated he is not seeking any change in the pro-life language.

Since 1984, the Republican Platform has read in part: "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." Pro-life Republicans want to keep that language despite media agitation against it.

Maryland State Senator Andy Harris won the 1st District Primary on Tuesday in a four-way race against liberal Republican Wayne Gilchrest who has represented the district for the past 16 years. Mr. Harris, who was endorsed by the Republican National Coalition for Life PAC, defeated Gilchrest, who reportedly votes with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi more than any other House Republican, despite support from former MD Lt. Governor Michael Steele and Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Andy Harris offered a clear contrast between his own solid pro-life record and that of Rep. Gilchrest who earned a 100 per cent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Visit the McCain for President web site — you will see some names that may surprise you http://www.johnmccain.com/supporters/. They will surprise you because, while John McCain claims a pro-life record, he supports research that involves the killing of human embryos and he justifies abortion for babies conceived through rape or incest. Those are not pro-life positions. He voted to expand taxpayer funding of embryo-killing research, and he joined other Senators in signing a letter to President Bush asking him to expand the number of embryonic stem cell lines to be used for research.

An insightful article for the New York Sun written by Josh Gerstein (1/22/08) reveals discrepancies in the Delegate counts being reported as the primaries and caucuses occur.

For instance, "on the Republican side, CNN's tally has Mitt Romney with 72 Delegates, the Associated Press has that number at 59, and so far CBS has counted just 35 Delegates for the former Massachusetts governor. Governor Huckabee has racked up 40 Delegates according to the AP, 29 Delegates per CNN, and only 7 in the view of CBS."

    Pro-Life Group Backs Thompson Despite

    Cybercast News Service
    Rejection Of GOP Platform
    By Fred Lucas

Citing a pro-life voting record and electability, the nation's largest pro-life organization endorsed Republican Fred Thompson for president Tuesday.

The endorsement by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) comes
just weeks after Thompson said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he
opposes "criminalizing" abortion and that he does not support the call for a pro-life amendment to the Constitution in the Republican Party platform.

    ...

"We could not endorse Fred Thompson based on our criteria" in a primary or general election, Colleen Parro, executive director of the Republican National Coalition for Life, told Cybercast News Service.

"All I can say is our criteria for endorsement is a candidate who supports a human life amendment to the Constitution and will work for it - someone who will support every issue with respect to life, including embryonic stem cells and end-of-life issues," she added.

The Republican Party platform has included a pro-life plank since 1984 that supports a "human life amendment" and endorses "legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."

Bob Novak on Thompson's Interview on Meet the Press

    A Major Abortion Blunder

    By Robert D. Novak

    Thursday, November 8, 2007; A27

Fred Thompson was well into a prolonged dialogue about abortion on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday when he said something that stunned social conservatives: "I do not think it is a wise thing to criminalize young girls and perhaps their parents as aiders and abettors." He then went further: "You can't have a [federal] law" that "would take young, young girls . . . and say, basically, we're going to put them in jail."

Those comments sent e-mails flying across the country, reflecting astonishment and rage from pro-life Republicans who had turned to Thompson as their best presidential bet for 2008. No serious antiabortion legislation ever has included criminal penalties against women who have abortions, much less their parents. Jailing women is a spurious issue raised by abortion rights activists. Interviewer Tim Russert did not bring it up in his questioning. What Thompson said could be expected from NARAL Pro-Choice America.

    Seven Things About Clinton

    BY R. EMMETT TYRRELL, JR.October 26, 2007

This week it was reported in the authoritative Capitol Hill newspaper, The Hill, that Don Van Natta Jr. and Jeff Gerth included some unsavory news about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in "Her Way," their recent book on her. Mrs. Clinton during the 1992 presidential campaign, "listened to a secretly recorded audiotape of a phone conversation of Clinton critics…." Washington observers appeared shocked.

Where have they been all these years? The Clintons have engaged in brute behavior for decades, much of it a matter of record. The Hill's report moves me to now list seven issues every American should know about the Clintons before 2008. Journalists should be particularly interested, as well as Democrats intent on avoiding a repeat of the Clinton 1990s.

    The GOP gutless wonders

Would you elect a man president of the United States who was afraid of tough questioning from Phyllis Schlafly or Star Parker?

Would you consider voting for a man who had better things to do than to talk to an audience of millions concerned about the assault on family values?

What would you say to front-running GOP presidential candidates who take your vote for granted because they think you have nowhere to go?

These are some of the questions you should be pondering today as we get ready for a Republican presidential debate next Monday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - a debate in which four major contenders will be conspicuously absent.

They are: Willard "Mitt" Romney, Rudolph Giuliani, John McCain and Fred Thompson.

Running on Polls or Walking by Faith?

Although the media seem intent on downplaying the influence of social conservatives in the upcoming election, a recent poll by Fabrizio McLaughlin Associates points to just how misled those assumptions are. The study, "An Elephant Looks in the Mirror 10 Years Later," discussions the transformation of the Republican Party in the last 10 years and makes the statistical case that not only do values issues play a key role in the GOP platform, but values voters make up 51% of the party. Twenty-seven percent, by their classification, are "focused" on moral issues--and another 24%, the "Moralists," have a "laser-like focus" on moral issues. The reality is, a majority of the GOP are values voters. For candidates to ignore these social issues is for them to ignore the single-largest group in the Republican Party. They do so at their own risk. The reason Rudy Giuliani (R) continues to do well in polling data is that most Americans don't know where he stands on these issues. However, where voters perceive him to stand in his faith is another survey altogether. The Pew Forum's latest poll found that the statistical front-runners in both parties, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Rudy Giuliani (R), are both considered the "least religious" by those surveyed. On the other hand, Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is considered "very religious" by 46%, followed by Sen. John McCain (R) at 18%. Interestingly, the poll didn't account for all candidates, which excludes those whom many would view as the most religious, including Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kans.) and Gov. Mike Huckabee (R). In the end, though, most voters would agree that how important the candidates' faith seems to be isn't half as important as how closely they live by it.

Abortion Questions Fail to Dim Thompson's Conservative Luster

    By Michael D. Shear
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Saturday, July 21, 2007

The 2 1/2 -minute video of Fred D. Thompson that played at the National Right to Life Committee's annual meeting last month dazzled the group, as the former senator talked about "the most important thing of all in this world -- and that is life."

Jury is still out on whether Fred Thompson is truly pro-life

As far as we are concerned, the jury is still out on whether Fred Thompson is truly pro-life at this point. While it is true that his record on votes scored by National Right to Life Committee is pro-life, we must remember that those votes were on matters related to regulating or restricting the practice of abortion. There were no votes on the essence of the right to life cause.

We are troubled by his recent comments regarding the Roe v. Wade decision. While he said he thinks it was a bad decision, he thinks the matter should be resolved by the individual states and that the states “should have some leeway.” (Tennesean.com, 6/10/07)

The right to life is a fundamental right that should be protected under the United States Constitution. States should not be able to decide willy-nilly whether or not to legalize the killing of unborn babies. Period. Our goal is to end legal abortion in America. At this point, it does not appear that Fred Thompson or, for that matter, most of the current Republican presidential candidates, share that goal.

    Rudy's not the one

    May 17, 2007
    By James C. Dobson, Ph.D.

The jig is up. Rudy Giuliani finally admitted in a speech at Houston Baptist College last week that he is an unapologetic supporter of abortion on demand. That revelation came as no great shock to those of us in the pro-life movement. His public pronouncements as mayor of New York, together with his more recent tap dances on the campaign trail, have told a very clear story.

    Keyes: No give on abortion

    By ASSOCIATED PRESS - April 26, 2007
Likening abortion to terrorism, conservative commentator Alan Keyes called on pro-life activists Wednesday to remain committed to ending abortion completely without compromise.

In legalizing abortion, Keyes said the United States has abandoned the principle that every person is created equal, a right which comes from the “hand of almighty God,” and allowed innocent babies to be killed just as terrorists kill innocent people. He likened judges who have allowed abortion to serial killers who take a false premise and logically work their way to their conclusion to justify their killing.

“We do not enter this battle with clean hands,” Keyes said of the war on terror. “Indeed I think God raised up this battle.”

Keyes delivered the fiery 45-minute speech to about 200 people gathered at the state Capitol to mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of a Colorado law that expanded abortion rights.

    State was pro-choice early

Colorado, where the law was signed on April 25, 1967, by Gov. John Love, was the first of 15 states to either allow abortion under more exceptions or to completely decriminalize it before Roe v. Wade legalized it nationwide.

The activists gathered to talk about strategy on how to move forward and much of the discussion focused on criticizing fellow anti-abortion activists who have pushed for state bans that allow exceptions for things such as rape. Keyes echoed that, criticizing the recent Supreme Court decision upholding the federal partial-birth abortion ban because it was still based on the premise that there is a constitutional right to abortion.

Keyes praised Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia for noting their disagreement with that in a concurring opinion and criticized John Roberts and Samuel Alito for not speaking out against that. Keyes, who unsuccessfully challenged Barack Obama for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, also criticized Republican presidential candidates John McCain and Mitt Romney for what he considered weak positions on abortion.

Keyes also sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1996 and 2000.

    Continue the fight

He said anti-abortion activists have to continue fighting for an end to abortion without rushing to make compromises or thinking about when they will win.

“We will tell them no, we will not allow a murder and will not call it a right,” Keyes said.

    Tancredo Addresses CPAC

    http://www.teamtancredo.com/news.php

The second video, which can be viewed by clicking on the link above, contains this quote:

"Conservatism doesn't need an adjective, it needs a leader. And it needs a leader who opposes abortions not because Iowa caucus goers oppose abortions. It needs a leader who opposes abortions because he knows God said, ‘I knew you when you were in the womb’.”

    No Deal, Rudy

This article is an excellent analysis of why Rudy Giuliani does not deserve the support of pro-life voters, and in fact, has earned their right to oppose his nomination.

Also contained in the article is a shocking revelation that the United States government has built the first abortion clinics ever in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

How is it that we knew nothing of this? Where were our pro-life members of Congress?

Congressman Duncan Hunter is running for President. Please listen to the 20-minute speech he delivered at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) last weekend. (http://www.hipcast.com/playweb?audioid=Pbae4425b7b7211ed27eaec2ba6c7a378Y1hxQlREYmN2) [click on arrow to listen]

If you are not able to connect with the audio, at least you will know that he made the statement below:

"If any judicial candidate who comes before me can look at a sonogram of an unborn child and not see a valuable human life, then I will not appoint that candidate to a federal bench."

    How refreshing.

McCain wins close SC straw poll; Guiliani and Hunter close behind

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sen. John McCain narrowly won a presidential straw poll held in the northern part of this early voting state, local Republican officials said Friday.

McCain beat former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani by just two votes. The Arizona senator's tally of 164 ballots was six more than California Rep. Duncan Hunter. Severe weather Thursday night caused a low turnout of about 800 people and forced the tallying to be suspended.
