Catholic Bishops Assail Pelosi's Pro-Abortion Stance
Self-described "ardent and practicing Catholic" Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) apparently has no clue what the Catholic Church teaches regarding the fundamental right to life because, in truth, she is an ardent and practicing pro-abortion legislator who has a consistent anti-life record.
In a well publicized August 24 interview on "Meet the Press" Pelosi, responding to moderator Tom Brokaw, in which he recounted Barack Obama's answer to the question on when life begins, that it is "above my pay grade," said, "I don't think anybody can tell you when life begins." She said, "As an ardent and practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition . . . St. Augustine said at three months. We don't know. The point is, it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right to choose."

Palin stands by declarations on 'Bridge to Nowhere'
Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska portrayed herself on Friday as part of a generation of women for whom questions about whether she can juggle a family of seven and the vice presidency — something that has been asked of her since she was named Senator John McCain’s Republican running mate — were meaningless.

Trig's Breakthrough
Below is a Washington Post Op-Ed regarding Down syndrome and relevant to the Prenatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act (S.1810). One section of note:
“This is properly called eugenic abortion -- the ending of "imperfect" lives to remove the social, economic and emotional costs of their existence. And this practice cannot be separated from the broader social treatment of people who have disabilities. By eliminating less perfect humans, deformity and disability become more pronounced and less acceptable. Those who escape the net of screening are often viewed as mistakes or burdens. A tragic choice becomes a presumption -- "Didn't you get an amnio?" -- and then a prejudice. And this feeds a social Darwinism in which the stronger are regarded as better, the dependent are viewed as less valuable, and the weak must occasionally be culled.”

RNC for Life Praises McCain Vice Presidential Pick, Palin
St. Paul, Minnesota—The Republican National Coalition for Life (RNC/Life) praises Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain for selecting pro-life Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) as his vice presidential running mate. Palin has been the governor of Alaska since 2006. A mother of five, she recently gave birth to her fifth child, her son Trig, who was diagnosed in-utero with Down’s Syndrome. Her selection makes her the very first Republican woman to be a vice presidential candidate.
“Sarah Palin is an outstanding governor, an exemplar of all that is good and true,” said RNC for Life National Chairman Phyllis Schlafly. “She is a major leader in the pro-life movement and that is main reason we chose her as our keynote speaker for our ‘Life of the Party’ party at this year’s GOP convention.”
“John McCain has just won the election with this pick,” said RNC for Life Executive Director Colleen Parro. “Governor Palin will have wide appeal among social conservatives and pro-life Republicans.”
Parro continued, “This is the conservative outreach from the McCain campaign for which we have been hoping. We couldn’t have asked for a better VP pick.”

John McCain Will Not Change Republican Party's Pro-Life Platform on Abortion
Minneapolis, MN (LifeNews.com) -- The McCain campaign confirmed on Thursday that presidential candidate John McCain will not touch the Republican Party's platform that calls for legal protection for unborn children from abortion. In years past, McCain had wanted minor changes to allow for exceptions in cases of rape or incest.

Contact the McCain campaign!
To Friends and Supporters of RNC/Life:
Informed sources tell us that top-level officials in the McCain campaign have been calling certain state Party chairmen to find out what they think the reaction of Republican voters would be in the event that John McCain chooses a pro-abortion-choice running mate.
Why would they do that, unless McCain is seriously considering someone like Pennsylvania’s Tom Ridge, or even a liberal Democrat like Joe Lieberman?
John McCain will be 71-years of age if he is elected President. He has had four bouts with malignant melanoma. His continued good health is to be hoped for, but should not be taken for granted. The nominee for Vice President is of the utmost importance.
At Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church last Saturday, Senator McCain declared: “I will be a pro-life President and this presidency wil have pro-life policies. That’s my commitment.” Because he has made that commitment, the expectation on the part of many pro-life and pro-family conservatives that John McCain, if elected President, would nominate pro-life judges to the federal courts and the Supreme Court, would be totally dashed if he chooses a running mate who is not pro-life.
Please contact the McCain campaign to let them know your views on this matter.
It is our position that a VP nominee who is not pro-life is unacceptable. It would be a slap in the face to the base of the Party and would most likely cost McCain and the Republican Party, the election.

Does Ann Stone Want McCain to Lose?
Contact: Phyllis Schlafly - 314/721-1213
Colleen Parro - 214/559-4460
August 15, 2008
Republican fundraiser Ann Stone has resurfaced to tell the press that she is "hopeful that some tweaks will be made to platform language that deals with the hot-button issue" of abortion. "If we're successful, there will be language in that plank or elsewhere that McCain wants to take a different track in dealing with abortion."
Ms. Stone is inviting Senator John McCain down a dead end "track" to defeat, and it's unlikely that he will accept her advice since he has a consistent pro-life record. The Republican Platform has been pro-life ever since Roe v. Wade, and Republicans are too smart to subject themselves to "flip-flop" criticism.
Phyllis Schlafly, national chairman of Republican National Coalition for Life, pointed out that "in a close election, pro-life voters make the difference. If John McCain is to win in November, he must keep faith with the pro-life and pro-family base of the Party."
Republican National Coalition for Life successfully led the battle to defend the pro-life plank in the Republican Platform in the Conventions of 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and expects to do it again this year despite Ms. Stone's press releases. Senator McCain has indicated he is not seeking any change in the pro-life language.
Since 1984, the Republican Platform has read in part: "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." Pro-life Republicans want to keep that language despite media agitation against it.

Pro-Life Challenger Beats Pro-Abortion Incumbent in MD Republican Primary
Maryland State Senator Andy Harris won the 1st District Primary on Tuesday in a four-way race against liberal Republican Wayne Gilchrest who has represented the district for the past 16 years. Mr. Harris, who was endorsed by the Republican National Coalition for Life PAC, defeated Gilchrest, who reportedly votes with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi more than any other House Republican, despite support from former MD Lt. Governor Michael Steele and Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Andy Harris offered a clear contrast between his own solid pro-life record and that of Rep. Gilchrest who earned a 100 per cent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Republicans for Choice Endorses McCain
Some prominent pro-life Republicans have endorsed John McCain for the Republican presidential nomination. Visit the McCain for President web site — you will see some names that may surprise you http://www.johnmccain.com/supporters/. They will surprise you because, while John McCain claims a pro-life record, he supports research that involves the killing of human embryos and he justifies abortion for babies conceived through rape or incest. Those are not pro-life positions. He voted to expand taxpayer funding of embryo-killing research, and he joined other Senators in signing a letter to President Bush asking him to expand the number of embryonic stem cell lines to be used for research.

News Outlets Distort Delegate Counts
An insightful article for the New York Sun written by Josh Gerstein (1/22/08) reveals discrepancies in the Delegate counts being reported as the primaries and caucuses occur.
For instance, "on the Republican side, CNN's tally has Mitt Romney with 72 Delegates, the Associated Press has that number at 59, and so far CBS has counted just 35 Delegates for the former Massachusetts governor. Governor Huckabee has racked up 40 Delegates according to the AP, 29 Delegates per CNN, and only 7 in the view of CBS."

Pro-Life Group Backs Thompson Despite

Rejection Of GOP Platform
By Fred Lucas
Citing a pro-life voting record and electability, the nation's largest pro-life organization endorsed Republican Fred Thompson for president Tuesday.
The endorsement by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) comes
just weeks after Thompson said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he
opposes "criminalizing" abortion and that he does not support the call for a pro-life amendment to the Constitution in the Republican Party platform.
...
"We could not endorse Fred Thompson based on our criteria" in a primary or general election, Colleen Parro, executive director of the Republican National Coalition for Life, told Cybercast News Service.
"All I can say is our criteria for endorsement is a candidate who supports a human life amendment to the Constitution and will work for it - someone who will support every issue with respect to life, including embryonic stem cells and end-of-life issues," she added.
The Republican Party platform has included a pro-life plank since 1984 that supports a "human life amendment" and endorses "legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."

Bob Novak on Thompson's Interview on Meet the Press
A Major Abortion Blunder
By Robert D. Novak
Thursday, November 8, 2007; A27
Fred Thompson was well into a prolonged dialogue about abortion on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday when he said something that stunned social conservatives: "I do not think it is a wise thing to criminalize young girls and perhaps their parents as aiders and abettors." He then went further: "You can't have a [federal] law" that "would take young, young girls . . . and say, basically, we're going to put them in jail."
Those comments sent e-mails flying across the country, reflecting astonishment and rage from pro-life Republicans who had turned to Thompson as their best presidential bet for 2008. No serious antiabortion legislation ever has included criminal penalties against women who have abortions, much less their parents. Jailing women is a spurious issue raised by abortion rights activists. Interviewer Tim Russert did not bring it up in his questioning. What Thompson said could be expected from NARAL Pro-Choice America.

FRED THOMPSON A THREAT TO THE PRO-LIFE PLANK IN THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL PLATFORM
Pro-life Republican voters who had hopes that Fred Thompson might be their man to support for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination had their hopes dashed yesterday when Mr. Thompson appeared on “Meet the Press.”
The Republican Party Platform has supported a Human Life Amendment to the U.S. Constitution since 1976.
Pro-life Americans want legal protection restored to innocent human beings from the moment of conception.
That protection will not be restored simply by overturning Roe v. Wade, which is all Mr. Thompson supports. If the issue were slavery rather than abortion, his approach would be to allow states to be either slave or free, regardless of the fact that black people are human beings not to be treated as property. Thompson admits that he knows a human being exists at the moment of conception and abortion is the taking of a human life. The fact that he opposes protecting those lives at the federal level is shocking and reveals a mindset that, contrary to his rhetoric, considers the unborn child nothing more than the mother’s property and unworthy of protection under the law.
A transcript of the interview can be seen below.
Fred Thompson Opposes Human Life Amendment
www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjeyLcj69lU
TIM RUSSERT: Let me ask you about an issue very important in your party's primary process, and that's abortion. This is the 2004 Republican Party platform, and here it is. We say the unborn child is a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution. We endorse legislation to make it clear that the 14th Amendment protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortion. Could you run as a candidate on that platform promising a human life amendment, banning all abortions?
FRED THOMPSON: No.
RUSSERT: You would not?
THOMPSON: No. I have always -- and that's been my position the entire time I've been in politics. I thought Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. I think this platform originally came out as a response, particularly Roe v. Wade, because of that. Before Roe v. Wade, states made those decisions. I think people ought to be free, state and local levels, to make decisions that even Fred Thompson disagrees with. That's what freedom is all about. And I think the diversity we have among the states, the system of federalism we have where power is divided between the state and federal government has served us very, very well. I think that's true of abortion. I think Roe v. Wade hopefully one day will be overturned and we can go back to the pre Roe v. Wade days.
RUSSERT: Each state could make their own abortion laws?
THOMPSON: Yeah. But to have an amendment compelling going back even further than pre Roe v. Wade, a constitutional amendment to do that, I do not think would be the way to go.
Fred Thompson Would Not Ban Abortions
www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-b1xQNRA4g
TIM RUSSERT: We went back to your papers at the University of Tennessee and read through them. This is what you said back in 1994 as a candidate. Here is the first one. I'm not willing to support laws that prohibit early term abortions. I'm not suddenly upon election as a Senator going to know when life begins and where that place ought to be exactly. It comes down to whether you believe life begins at conception. I don't know if my own mind if that is the case, so I don't feel law ought to impose that standard on other people. So, you yourself don't know when life begins?
FRED THOMPSON: No. I didn't know then.
RUSSERT: Do you know now?
THOMPSON: My head has always been in the same place. My public position has always been the same. I've been 100% pro-life in every vote I've ever cast in service as a United States Senator.
RUSSERT: Your for allowing states to have pro-abortion rights. And you yourself, and I have ten different statements from you, saying that you would not ban abortion, it's a woman's right, and you would not ban it in the first trimester.
THOMPSON: You've just said two different things here. You know it's a complex issue concerning whether or not you're going to have a federal law, whether or not you're going to have a federal constitutional amendment, those kinds of things. Nobody's proposed a federal law on this. Nobody's recently proposed a federal constitutional amendment. I had an opportunity to vote on an array of things over eight years, whether it be partial-birth abortion, whether it be Mexico city policy, whether it be transporting young girls across state lines to avoid parental notification laws, all that. 100% pro-life. But let me finish on my point, and my legal record is there, and that's the way I would govern if I was President. I would take those same positions. No federal funding for abortions, no nothing that would in any way encourage abortion. When I saw -- again, all consistent with what I've said. People ask me hypothetically, okay, you know, it goes back to the states. Somebody comes up with a bill and they say we're going to outlaw this or the other. And my response was I do not think it is a wise thing to criminalize young girls and perhaps their parents as aiders and abettors and perhaps their family physician. And that's what you're talking about, it's not the sense of the Senate. Your talking about potential criminal law. I said those things are going to ultimately be won in the hearts and minds of people. I'm probably a pretty good example of that. Although my head and my legislative record's always been the same, when I saw that sonogram of my little now 4-year-old, it's changed my heart. It's changed the way I look at things. I was looking at my child when I saw that. And I knew that, and I felt that, and that's the way I feel today. And I think life begins at conception. I always -- it was abstract to me before. I was a father earlier when I was very young. I was busy. I went about my way. One of the maybe few advantages you have of getting a little bit older.
RUSSERT: So you believe life begins at conception, and that's taking of a human life?
THOMPSON: Yes, I do.
RUSSERT: You would allow abortion to be performed in states if chosen by states for people who think otherwise.
THOMPSON: I do not think that you can have a law that would be effective and that would be the right thing to do, as I say, in terms of potentially -- you can't have a law that cuts off an age group or something like that which potentially would take young girls in extreme situations and say, basically, we're going to put them in jail to do that. I just don't think that that's the right thing to do. It cannot change the way I feel about it morally, but legally and practically, I've got to recognize that fact. It is a dilemma that I'm not totally comfortable with, but that's the best I can do in resolving it in my own mind.
Fred Thompson Opposes Federal Marriage Amendment
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl5o-q35YA8
TIM RUSSERT: And also with gay marriage, according to the Associated Press, Thompson favors a constitutional amendment that bars judges from legalizing gay marriage, but also leaves open the door for state legislature to approve the practice. So, if a state said we want to have gay marriages in our state, you would be okay with that?
FRED THOMPSON: Yes. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Nobody ever thought that was contested until recently. We've had a couple of judges in a couple of states decide to turn all that on its head, so we've had, again, a judge created problem. I would support a constitutional amendment that addresses this judge created problem and say judges can't do that. But at the end of day, if a state legislature and a Governor decide that that's what they want to do, yes, they should have the freedom to do what Fred Thompson thinks is a very bad idea.

Seven Things About Clinton
BY R. EMMETT TYRRELL, JR.October 26, 2007
This week it was reported in the authoritative Capitol Hill newspaper, The Hill, that Don Van Natta Jr. and Jeff Gerth included some unsavory news about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in "Her Way," their recent book on her. Mrs. Clinton during the 1992 presidential campaign, "listened to a secretly recorded audiotape of a phone conversation of Clinton critics…." Washington observers appeared shocked.
Where have they been all these years? The Clintons have engaged in brute behavior for decades, much of it a matter of record. The Hill's report moves me to now list seven issues every American should know about the Clintons before 2008. Journalists should be particularly interested, as well as Democrats intent on avoiding a repeat of the Clinton 1990s.

Rudy Giuliani's Mayoral Backing of Adoption Over Abortion Never Existed
by Steven ErteltLifeNews.com EditorOctober 1, 2007
New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- Over the last several months, pro-abortion Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani has made adoption a hallmark of his campaign. He says adoption is his plan to combat abortions as president and that he reduced abortions as mayor, but a college professor says his archives show Giuliani never pushed it.

The GOP gutless wonders
Would you elect a man president of the United States who was afraid of tough questioning from Phyllis Schlafly or Star Parker?
Would you consider voting for a man who had better things to do than to talk to an audience of millions concerned about the assault on family values?
What would you say to front-running GOP presidential candidates who take your vote for granted because they think you have nowhere to go?
These are some of the questions you should be pondering today as we get ready for a Republican presidential debate next Monday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - a debate in which four major contenders will be conspicuously absent.
They are: Willard "Mitt" Romney, Rudolph Giuliani, John McCain and Fred Thompson.

Running on Polls or Walking by Faith?
Although the media seem intent on downplaying the influence of social conservatives in the upcoming election, a recent poll by Fabrizio McLaughlin Associates points to just how misled those assumptions are. The study, "An Elephant Looks in the Mirror 10 Years Later," discussions the transformation of the Republican Party in the last 10 years and makes the statistical case that not only do values issues play a key role in the GOP platform, but values voters make up 51% of the party. Twenty-seven percent, by their classification, are "focused" on moral issues--and another 24%, the "Moralists," have a "laser-like focus" on moral issues. The reality is, a majority of the GOP are values voters. For candidates to ignore these social issues is for them to ignore the single-largest group in the Republican Party. They do so at their own risk. The reason Rudy Giuliani (R) continues to do well in polling data is that most Americans don't know where he stands on these issues. However, where voters perceive him to stand in his faith is another survey altogether. The Pew Forum's latest poll found that the statistical front-runners in both parties, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Rudy Giuliani (R), are both considered the "least religious" by those surveyed. On the other hand, Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is considered "very religious" by 46%, followed by Sen. John McCain (R) at 18%. Interestingly, the poll didn't account for all candidates, which excludes those whom many would view as the most religious, including Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kans.) and Gov. Mike Huckabee (R). In the end, though, most voters would agree that how important the candidates' faith seems to be isn't half as important as how closely they live by it.
