Military Abortions, Homosexuality Vote Coming Soon

Eagle There is a critical vote coming up quickly regarding abortion in the U.S. Senate, probably very soon after Thanksgiving. The lame duck Senate will vote on the National Defense Authorization Bill and, as we explained in the Sept. 17, 2010 e-Notes, Majority Leader Harry Reid is trying an end run to give some "thank you gifts" to his left-wing base. How? By adding some very controversial amendments to this Defense bill:

  1. Repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy, which will impose open homosexuality upon the U.S. armed services, without waiting for the pending military report which is analyzing the effect of such a policy;
  2. Allowing abortions to be performed on any military base in the world, utilizing personnel, supplies and facilities paid for with our tax dollars, which, under current law, has been prohibited since 1966; another provision in the law which would be changed prohibits the use of DOD funds for abortion except to save the life of the mother.
Sen. John McCain led a successful filibuster against the bill last September and is planning to do so again. He needs 41 votes in order to sustain his objection to the bill coming to the floor for a full Senate vote (the technical term for a filibuster). This again is possible if all the GOP Senators stick together and refuse to invoke cloture (a procedure to cut off debate and bring the bill to the floor for a vote) as Reid will request.

An avid supporter of the military, Sen. McCain knows that the needed military funding can easily be provided with a continuing resolution minus these left-wing amendments. If the amendments are voted on individually, we would have to rally 51 votes to defeat each one, and we don't have those votes. Thus, sustaining the filibuster (only 41 votes needed) is our only chance to stop them in the Senate!

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Please contact your two U.S. Senators and urge them, particularly if they are Republicans, to stand firm with Senator McCain as he tries to keep this bill with its non-germane, politically-motivated amendments from coming to the floor of the Senate, where we would likely lose the vote. Any Democrat senators who are up in 2012 may also be very willing to listen to their constituents on this issue.

1-202-224-3121 is the Capitol main switchboard for all Senators. (You may find it easier to get through to their home district offices and/or to use faxes to communicate with them.)

Time is short — please flood the Senators with your phone calls and faxes. Be knowledgeable, polite and firm in your request that they stand with Sen. McCain and vote against cloture. It is our only way to stop these additions to the bill.

Please realize that a vote FOR cloture is a vote FOR legalizing homosexuality in the military and legalizing abortion on every U.S. military base in the world. Thank you in advance for your help and please pass this on to others as well. We will keep you posted as the struggle against these radical amendments progresses.
