Thank you! We did it! TX Planned Parenthood is Defunded!
At long last, the Texas legislature finally passed SB7 on Monday, which will defund Planned Parenthood and its affiliates through prioritizing the Medicaid funds, as well as prohibiting a county-funded hospital district from performing elective abortions using tax funds. The bill was not passed during the regular legislative session which ended May 31, so pro-life Gov. Rick Perry called a special session to consider this bill as well as the state budget and other issues. The bill could have passed last Friday, as it was supposed to be on the floor then. But so many legislators did not even show up in Austin, including some Republicans, that there was not a quorum and the vote had to be postponed until Monday, just three days before the special session would end. (You might check with your own House member to see if he or she was “in the district” or in Austin, where they should have been for that vote. Some were even on vacation out of state!)
Thankfully, there was no “glitch” in the process and our Republican House majority did pass the bill and then almost immediately the Senate followed suit. Gov. Perry has said he will sign the bill into law very quickly, as he did with the sonogram and Choose Life license plate bills from the earlier session.
MANY THANKS TO YOU, our RNC for Life readers, who were instrumental in helping keep the grassroots pressure on the legislature to pass this historic legislation. If you would like to help keep these kinds of alerts coming as we help pass other pro-life legislation both at the state and national levels, please consider making a donation now. Thank you!
