International Policy Vote Expected in June Act Now!
CHINA - Please call your representative in Congress now and tell him/her that a vote to renew "most favored nation" (MFN) trade status for the People's Republic of China is a vote against life and liberty.
- China's "one child" policy of forced abortion, sterilization and infanticide is barbaric. Women are brutally tortured with cattle prods, electrodes, thumb cuffs, beatings and shackles until they agree to let their babies be killed.
- The U.S. has a $40 billion trade deficit with China. They charge a 35% tariff on our goods going in to China, while we charge them a paltry 2% on Chinese imports. Why should their evil regime receive preferential trade treatment at the expense of our country?
- We are importing from China vast amounts of goods that are manufactured in slave labor camps.
- China sells poison gas to Iran. For years China has been the chief supplier of the chemicals and technology Iran needs to become self-sufficient in chemical warfare. (New York Times, "China's Poisononous Lie" by A.M. Rosenthal, 5/29/97) China distributes nuclear material and missile technology to our enemies.
- Religious persecution in China continues unabated. Every Catholic bishop loyal to the Pope is in prison and every Catholic priest is considered a criminal. Evangelical "house Christians" who practice their faith in hiding because they fear for their lives are beaten and imprisoned for "re-education."
Our trade policy with China is just plain wrong. We should not give preferential treatment to nations that have no regard for life or liberty. Speaker Gingrich reportedly supports renewing MFN. House Majority Leader Dick Armey is leaning toward opposing renewal, and he should be strongly encouraged to vote no. We cannot have free trade with a
country whose people are not free. Congressman Bill Paxon (R-NY) has sent a letter to President Clinton withdrawing his support for MFN, saying that our policy has only served to intensify the repression in China. Every Republican in Congress should do what Rep. Paxon will do - vote against renewing MFN status for China. And when Bill Clinton vetoes it, they should override.
