Genetic Testing Threatens Unborn Babies
It is now possible to test
unborn babies for at least 200 inherited conditions. In cases where
there is a chance to cure a disease or correct an
abnormality, this can be a great blessing. But, for many conditions for
which there is no cure as yet, such testing can amount to a
search-and-destroy mission. Pro-life people must be aware that
genetic testing without the hope of a cure will be used for the purpose
of recommending abortion. According to USA Today, 8/15/97, "at least
half the women who learn their fetuses have serious
genetic disorders will end their pregnancies. Furthermore, the degree
to which an unborn baby may be affected is often not conclusively
learned until after birth. In addition, the procedure, called
amniocentesis, is itself dangerous to the baby in some cases. Insurance
companies and health care organizations must be prevented, by law, from
requiring genetic testing of unborn babies as a
condition of coverage or treatment.
Indiana
The Indiana Supreme Court this week will begin hearing
arguments on whether an infant born with severe birth defects should
have been born at all. The parents of the infant, who died
after four months of life, are suing a genetic counselor for failing to
warn them about the baby’s defects. Had they known, they would have had
an abortion. (Washington Times, 9/8/97)
The United Nations Furthers Planned Parenthood's Agenda
Babette
Francis, a pro-life, pro-family leader from Australia, and a frequent
attendee at United Nations conferences, shared some of
her insights with us in her report, "Practical Lessons from UN
Conferences." Babette asked an official with the World Bank, Michael
Cohen if the World Bank made loans to developing countries
conditional on their adopting population control programs, and he said
they didn't make it conditional but such countries were offered lower
rates of interest
. Population control programs are
integrated into other harmless or beneficial UN programs (such as clean
water), making it difficult for developing countries to reject these
fertility reduction initiatives. Mrs. Francis reports that Dr.
Nafiz Sadik, executive director of the United Nations Fund for
Population Affairs (UNFPA), announced at the World Food Summit that she
had now signed agreements with the International Red
Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the UN High Commission for Refugees
(UNHCR) to promote UNFPA’s population control agenda. So, some of the
funds used to provide tents and other
life-saving resources for refugees and disaster victims will now be
diverted to providing truckloads of abortifacients and condoms.
How to Help Rep. Linda Smith Win WA Senate Seat
We reported in our
August 8 issue of FaxNotes that Senator Mitch McConnell, chairman of the
National Republican Senatorial Committee,
is not only not supporting pro-life Congresswoman Linda Smith in her
race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Patty Murray
(D-WA), but has actually offered $5 million of Senatorial
Committee funds to anyone who will get in the primary race against her.
In recent days it has been reported that Senate Majority Leader Trent
Lott has encouraged Rep. George Nethercutt (mixed
voting record on abortion), to enter the primary. Rep. Smith has
angered the Republican establishment because she supports campaign
finance reform legislation, to which they and many others, are
unalterably opposed. A staunch defender of the right to life, Linda
Smith will need generous grassroots support in order to overcome her own
party’s efforts to defeat her. She can be contacted at:

Pro-Life Demonstrators Follow Whitman's Trail
New Jersey pro-life
activists have been dogging the footsteps of Governor Christine Todd
Whitman at almost every campaign stop as she seeks
reelection in November. Whitman, who is outspokenly pro-abortion,
vetoed the ban on partial-birth abortions passed by the New Jersey
Legislature and has publicly stated her agreement with
President Clinton's veto of the federal ban. One of the signs seen most
often outside Whitman's events reads: "WHITMAN'S DEATH TOLL: 284 BABIES
KILLED SINCE HER VETO OF
THE PARTIAL-BIRTH ABORTION BAN" Gov. Whitman has drawn still another
opponent, the Libertarian Party candidate, Murray Sabrin, who has raised
more than $236,000 in contributions,
making him eligible for state matching funds. Observers tell us that
Sabrin's entry into the race may increase the chance that Whitman, whose
approval ratings are showing a decline, may be defeated
in November.
Texas
The New York-based Center for Reproductive Law and policy, an
abortion-advocacy law firm, has filed a suit claiming that, under the
Texas Constitution, taxpayers must pay for Medicaid
abortions. Their claims are based, in part, on the Texas Equal Rights
Amendment (ERA) which passed in 1973, and also on the so-called right to
privacy. Greater Austin Right To Life, which has
prepared a brief in the case, says if Texas loses the suit, there could
be 4,000 to 8,000 Medicaid abortions every year costing the taxpayers an
estimated $1,200,000.
