"Pro-Life" Label Increasingly Misused - If Candidate X,
who thinks a mother should have the right to choose an abortion if her baby was conceived through rape or incest, can get the endorsement of pro-life groups and support from pro-life activists, why should Candidate Y be expected to take a stronger, 100% pro-life-without-discrimination position? That's a question that should be addressed by politically active pro-lifers. How does a politician who thinks a mother should have a legal right to kill her unborn baby deserve to be called pro-life? After all, the "rape and incest exception" position really means the candidate will support most efforts to regulate or restrict the practice of abortion, but will not support efforts to make it illegal! If the goal of the pro-life movement is to restore legal protection of the right to life for all innocent human beings, and we believe it is, why are some pro-life groups helping candidates who do not share that goal? Too many candidates "with exceptions" are gaining pro-life support and our ability to achieve our ultimate goal is being weakened as a result. Remember, the Republican National Coalition for Life PAC contributes only to candidates who are pro-life without discrimination. "Tomorrow Never Comes"
Jack Kenny's column in the Manchester Union Leader, 1/18/98, focused a laser beam on the response of Republican establishmentarians to Tim Lambert's resolution ending funding by the Republican National Committee of candidates who do not support banning partial-birth abortions. Commenting that the party establishment pulled out all the stops to defeat the resolution at the RNC meeting in Palm Springs, Mr. Kenny said: "Even as conspicuous a pro-life champion as Rep. Henry Hyde, (R-IL) has called for its defeat. ‘In politics, you win by addition, and we need every Republican vote we can muster to maintain our majority in the House and Senate,' Hyde wrote in a letter to party chairman James Nicholson, who also opposes the resolution. ‘The single most important thing we can do to protect the unborn is to protect our majority,' said Hyde.

"He can't be serious. . . . Let's see, now. Pro-life Republicans should help elect pro-abortion Republicans, so we can have an allegedly pro-life Speaker of the House going around the country trying to elect more ‘abortion-rights' Republicans. That way they can maintain the Republican majority in Congress, which Hyde says is "the single most important thing we can do to protect the unborn.'

"The Republican ‘big tent' is where ‘abortion-rights' advocates, who are hostile to life, and moderates, who are merely indifferent to it, get together with pro-life Republicans, who agree to forget about it until after the next election. And since there's always another election coming, we never get beyond ‘the next election.' At least pro-life Republicans have a theme song. It's called ‘Tomorrow Never Comes.' "

Indiana
Killing a viable fetus can now carry murder charges in Indiana (except during an abortion). The state Legislature recently overrode the governor's veto of a bill that allows for murder charges when a viable unborn baby is intentionally killed during a crime. (Citizen Issues Alert, 1/28/98)

Support for Abortion Declining
In the first major shift in public opinion since the Roe v. Wade decision 25 years ago, eight USA Today/CNN/Gallup polls taken since 1994 show a drop of 8 percentage points among people who say they support legal abortion under any circumstances. From 1975 through 1995, Gallup polls showed a steady increase in support for legal abortion under any circumstances. By September 1995, 31% were in that category. But in July 1996, the number dropped to 25% and has remained in the mid-20's since. (USA Today, 1/21/98)

Kevin Costner/Tom Cruise Meet Kevorkian
Despite a busy schedule, Kevorkian had time to attend Time magazine's 75th anniversary celebrity gala in New York on March 3, escorting Feiger [Kevorkian's lawyer] employee Rebecca Eaton. Eaton says that "everyone wanted to talk to Dr. Kevorkian," and actor Tom Cruise went out of his way to tell Kevorkian that he supports what he is doing. Because Eaton wanted to meet actor Kevin Costner at the gala, Kevorkian approached him and said: "If you don't come meet my date, I'm going to kill you." Costner came over. (Detroit News, 3/7/98)

Chilling Report on Doctors Who Would Kill
A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine has found that four out of five doctors have never been asked by their patients to assist a suicide. But, when asked if they would write lethal prescriptions if the law permitted it, 36% of doctors said "yes" and 24 % said they would administer lethal injections themselves. Clearly, the law matters — right now it is restraining a large number of doctors from participating in assisted suicide and euthanasia. Chilling! (Washington Update, 4/23/98)
