Pro-Life Candidates Win in Indiana
Two committed pro-life candidates
won contested primaries in the May
5 election in Indiana. In the 9th Congressional District, Jean Leising
won handily over three opponents with
68% of the vote. As a state Senator, Mrs. Leising, who successfully
sponsored pro-life legislation, will face
pro-abortion Democrat Baron Hill in November. In the 10th Congressional
District, Gary Hofmeister gained
44% of the vote, defeating pro-abortion advocate Virginia Blankenbaker
and three other opponents. Mr.
Hofmeister’s opponent in the November election will be Democrat
incumbent Julia Carson, who is supported by
the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.) and the abortion lobby.
Alaska Poised to Grant Insurance Coverage to Chemicals-that-Kill
The
abortion lobby is pushing
legislation that would force insurance companies to pay for
abortion-causing drugs, and on May 4 the Alaska
House passed the bill 25-13. The bill would require health insurers
to cover so-called “contraceptive” drugs
and devices. Planned Parenthood, by its own admission, acknowledges
that “the pill” does not always prevent
conception, but when conception occurs, and a human being is in
existence, “the pill” causes the lining of the
uterus to become inhospitable to the developing baby who dies from lack
of nourishment and is expelled. This is
not “contraception”, it is abortion. The latest chemical weapon against
unborn babies is the “morning after
pill”, or the “Emergency Contraceptive Pill” (ECP), a higher dosage of
ordinary birth control pills which are used
within 72 hours after intercourse to prevent conception or
implantation. Insurance companies that do not cover
chemicals-that-kill such as Norplant, Depo Provera, birth control pills
and EPC’s should not be forced to do so.
These drugs are medically unnecessary, elective, not required for any
healthcare purpose, and are
potentially dangerous to the woman’s health. Pro-life citizens in
Alaska and every other state should be
aware that this effort is underway and educate their state legislators
so they will oppose it. The state-by-state
effort to pass similar bills is part of the strategy being used by the
abortion lobby to build momentum for the
enactment of the “Equity in Prescription and Contraceptive Coverage
Act” that has been introduced in Congress
by Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Rep. Jim Greenwood (R-PA), both of
whom are aggressively
pro-abortion. Passage of this legislation is expected to guarantee a
financial windfall for Planned Parenthood
and other providers of abortion and abortion-related services who buy
and sell these drugs at an enormous profit.
A similar bill recently passed in Connecticut.
Georgia GOP Passes Lambert Resolution
On March 15 the policy making
State Committee of the
Republican Party of Georgia overwhelmingly passed the Lambert Resolution
to deny funding or support to
Republican candidates who oppose banning partial-birth abortions. The
measure is expected to affect at least
two state legislators.
Santorum Nominates Abortion Advocate to PA Federal Bench
Republican
Senators Rick Santorum and
Arlen Specter have joined in support of President Clinton’s nomination
of pro-abortion Democrat Lynette
Norton, a leading donor to EMILY’s List, to the U.S. District Court in
Pittsburgh. While Senator Specter’s
support of the nomination is consistent with his advocacy of a mother’s
right to kill her baby, pro-life
Republicans in Pennsylvania are outraged that Senator Santorum has once
again publicly supported a
person for a powerful position who mirrors President Clinton on
abortion. He previously campaigned for
New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, who vetoed a ban on
partial-birth abortion that was passed by
the NJ Legislature.
