Planned Parenthood Reaps Huge Profits Amid Taxpayer "Rip Off"
Stop Planned Parenthood (STOPP) director Jim Sedlak, reporting on the Annual Report just released by Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), says that clearly, "Taxpayer money is swelling PPFA's coffers."

The PPFA Annual Report states that, in its 1998-1999 fiscal year, PPFA received $176.5 million in government grants and contracts. Sedlak estimates that 75% of that, or $132.4 million, comes from the federal government and the remainder from state and local governments. Mr. Sedlak said, "All the federal money to PPFA was not needed to cover its expenses. It went, instead, to swell its bottom line. American taxpayers are scrimping and saving to pay taxes that are being used to increase the bank accounts of Planned Parenthood. It's an outrage!"

According to STOPP, over the last 13 years, $1.8 billion has been extorted from those of us who pay taxes, to benefit Planned Parenthood and its pro-abortion agenda. During that time PPFA realized a total profit of $355.6 million, and never reported a loss. "Each year since 1995, PPFA has shown a steady rise in its profits (income in excess of expenditures), but its $125.8 million profit this year is just obscene," Mr. Sedlak said.

The new Planned Parenthood Annual Report shows net assets totaling $536.3 million. "These numbers may be wonderful if PPFA was just a normal business," said Sedlak, "but the organization claims to be a charity and wants all kinds of special deals - including reduced rate advertising in the media."

Planned Parenthood abortion clinics performed 167,928 abortions in 1999, up from 165,174 the year before.

We join Mr. Sedlak in asking every citizen to contact Members of Congress and insist that they stop taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. Currently, the Congress is engaged in confiscating our money against our will for activities that we consider to be morally wrong.

Please call your Members of Congress today and demand that they stop funding Planned Parenthood!

Mike Forbes to Run as Pro-Life Democrat in NY-1
Congressman Michael Forbes left the Republican Party in July and became a Democrat, citing the "extremism" of GOP leadership in the House of Representatives, according to an Associated Press story on 2/19/00. Mr. Forbes, who has a conservative voting record, has had Right to Life backing in all three of his congressional races.

While the Democrats, guided by the hope of taking back the majority in Congress in 2000, welcomed Rep. Forbes with open arms, his pro-life views are causing some of them to look on his re-election with a jaundiced eye. Mr. Forbes may run on the Right to Life line, causing Suffolk County Democratic leader Dominic Baranello to draw a line in the sand, saying, "I cannot support someone who is also running on the Right to Life line." The AP further reports that the Town of Brookhaven Democratic Committee Chairman Kevin Mitchell criticized Forbes for not attending Hillary Rodham Clinton's U.S. Senate race announcement.

A recent poll shows Forbes with 82% support among Democrats in his district.

We have pointed out many times that a Republican majority has not meant a pro-life majority in Congress. When pro-life legislation has passed it has been because of the commitment of 30-40 pro-life Democrats who join with Republicans to win against the formidable pro-abortion forces in Congress. Democrat or Republican, Congressman Mike Forbes can be expected to continue casting pro-life votes. And for that, we can be grateful.

Wonderful quote spoken many years ago by the wife of the late Richard J. Daley, Mayor of Chicago:
"I'd rather have a baby on my lap than on my conscience."
