Statement On the Decision of the Supreme Court in Stenberg v. Carhart Today, the Supreme Court struck down a Nebraska statute banning the partial birth abortion technique. We call upon the pro-life movement as a whole and the American people to move the debate over the right to life away from regulating the practice of abortion, or restricting how abortions may be performed, or at what stage of development the baby may be killed. This debate is fundamentally about the humanity of the baby from the moment of conception, whether he resides in the fallopian tube, the womb, or the petri dish. Nine individual Americans, sitting on the high court, should not have the final authority over life and death for millions of babies waiting to be born. Yesterday, The New York Times front page carried a story by Natalie Angier, “The Human Genome Abounds in Complex Contradictions.” In it, she said this: “The human genome is a pearl, a model of high performance and reliability. Millions of times a year, egg genome meets sperm genome, and the result is a human baby, its parts all in place, its brain a universe of love and meaning.” The evidence is irrefutable. A human being comes into existence at fertilization. Each of us deserves legal protection of our God-given right to life from that moment. That is the job of government, as established in the Declaration of Independence. Let us get on with it. | |
