Abortion-Breast Cancer Link at Issue at Beijing + 5
The Beijing + 5 Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) meeting is underway at the United Nations in New York with “Women and Health” featured as one of the 12 “critical areas of concern” to be addressed. Participating in a panel discussion on the subject were Dr. Joel Brind, president of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute (United States) and Babette Francis, president of Endeavor Forum (Australia), who pointed to the significant body of medical evidence that induced abortion exposes women to increased risk of breast cancer. Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Senior Fellow, the Beverly LaHaye Institute, commenting on the panel discussion said in a statement released on March 15, “We know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the leading cause of cancer deaths among women aged 40-59.” “Yet some delegates and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) continue to ignore the evidence that abortion puts women at increased risk for breast cancer. Their attempts to qualify their support for abortion with the term ‘safe abortion’ simply do not wash, because the evidence continues to accumulate that abortion is not ‘safe’ for women — medically or psychologically.”

Even the U.N. - related World Conference on Breast Cancer, in its 1998 Global Action Plan Report, cited “induced termination of pregnancies” as one of the leading hormone-related risk factors for breast cancer.

“It seems that radically pro-abortion delegates and NGO representatives at the Beijing +5 conference are allowing their political agenda to cloud their judgment,” Dr. Crouse asserted. “Despite the evidence of an abortion-breast cancer link, they still advocate abortion-on-demand as ‘a human right.’ But what about women’s right to know that abortion puts them at increased risk of breast cancer? Attempts by pro-abortion advocates to obscure this issue are dishonest and decidedly not in the best interests of women,” she added. Human Genes — “Inventions” or “Discoveries?”
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, (SPUC) (www.spuc.org.uk) of London reports on efforts to patent discoveries made by the Celera Company, which appears to be outpacing the Human Genome Project of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The Human Genome Project is in the process of mapping the entire human genetic code. Biomedical companies want to patent human genes. The SPUC report reveals that the U.S. Patent Office has already issued about 400 patents on human genes and genome companies have filed for tens of thousands more. The British Science Minister has pointed out that inventions, which may be patented, differ from discoveries, which may not. (Information source: The Times Website and the Daily Mail, 3/15/00, Pro-Life E-News, 3/14/00)

The patenting of human genes is a subject of enormous magnitude, yet we have not seen it addressed in any meaningful way by the pro-life movement leadership or by members of Congress. We agree with the British Science Minister — that scientific inventions or products achieved through such discoveries may be patented, but the discoveries themselves, in this case the basic components of human life, are the property of the Creator of the Universe, Almighty God. Please let your pro-life organizations and your representatives in Congress and your state legislature hear from you on this.
