Calls Needed to Senator Lott - “Do Not Remove the Inhofe Hold on Clinton Judicial Nominees” Life Advocacy Briefing of September 18, 2000 has reported that Oklahoma Republican Senator Jim Inhofe placed a hold Monday on all remaining Clinton judicial nominees. Quoting from the Judicial Selection Monitoring Project (JSMP), the briefing says Sen. Inhofe took the action “because Clinton had ‘acted in deliberate defiance of the Senate’ and ‘trampled on the advice and consent clause of the Constitution” through his abuse of the recess appointment power. Sen. Inhofe did the same thing last year, forcing President Clinton to sign a pledge that he would not appoint controversial nominees while the Senate was in recess; such appointments evade the Senate’s Constitutional power to advise and withhold consent to appointments for posts subject to Senate confirmation. Last November, reports JSMP, the President “broke his pledge, . . . and Sen. Inhofe — with the support of 19 other Senators — followed through on his promise and put holds on all judicial nominees. The move was thwarted by Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) who overruled the holds and proceeded with confirming more Clintonesque judges to the federal bench. Once again, Bill Clinton has made several recess appointments to avoid Senate scrutiny including Bill Lann Lee. Pro-life citizens are needed to phone Senator Trent Lott to express their expectation that he stand behind Senator Inhofe and retain the holds, to insure that no more Clinton judges will be appointed! Thank you to Senator Jesse Helms who stands for what is right, no matter what!
Turner’s advocacy of a mother’s right to kill her unborn baby is in sharp contrast to his defense of the black-tailed prairie dog. On July 17, 2000, USA Today featured Turner in a front page story about his amassing 1.7 million acres of U.S. land in his quest to protect wildlife. According to USA Today, his advocacy for prairie dogs, considered destructive vermin by generations of western cattle ranchers, often puts him at odds with his rural neighbors. But he makes no apologies: “Hey, God put ‘em here for a reason. Who are we to exterminate ‘em?”
