STATE WATCH
Virginia Pro-Lifer Wins Congressional Seat - Former state Senator Randy Forbes, a pro-life Republican, won election to Congress in Virginia s 4th District in a special election held on Tuesday, June 19. Mr. Forbes will take the seat vacated by the death of Democrat Rep. Norm Sisisky. RNC/Life PAC contributed to Congressman Forbes campaign and we congratulate him on his victory. We look forward to hearing from him as a new voice for the right to life on the floor of the House of Representatives.

New Jersey "Bret Schundler Wins Republican Primary: Liberal Republican Establishment Toppled" was the headline in a June 27 press release issued by Marie Tasy, Director of Public and Legislative Affairs of New Jersey Right to Life PAC. Addressing the fact that the New Jersey Republican Party backed former Congressman and pro-abortion liberal Bob Franks over pro-life Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler in the race for the Republican nomination for Governor, Mrs. Tasy said: Bret Schundler dispelled the myth that a candidate without Republican organization support can t win a state-wide primary. This election sends a wake-up call to the liberal wing of the Party that the majority of Republican primary voters are pro-life. Bret Schundler has proven that the right candidate with the right message can win.

The Party establishment in New Jersey was rocked to its foundation with Schundler s win because it signals the waning influence of the Christine Todd Whitman wing of the Party.

Iowa - Senator Chuck Grassley Angers Pro-Life Constituents - Iowans are reportedly furious over remarks made by Senator Grassley in a radio interview on June 26, in which he reportedly said that he favors using human embryos for stem cell research. Sen. Grassley, who has supported the right to life cause throughout his career, was evidently asked if the embryos should be used as long as they are going to be thrown away. His remarks, along with those of Senators Hatch, Thurmond, Lott and others over the past few days, illustrate the amazing degree of ignorance that exists among these men regarding the nature of the human embryo and indeed, the process of human development. We will say it one more time: When a 23 chromosome egg is united with a 23 chromosome sperm, a 46 chromosome, single cell human being is generated. That single cell contains the DNA of that person in his or her totality. Cell division occurs rapidly as human development continues throughout all its stages until natural death. When you kill an embryo you kill a unique, individual human being. You can't obtain embryonic stem cells without killing the human embryo.

The question arises: What do we do with the 100,000 + embryonic babies who are currently frozen in liquid nitrogen tanks in in vitro fertilization clinics? Answer: Every one of those tiny embryonic babies has two parents who should be held responsible for his or her well-being. They should be implanted and every effort should be made to ensure a safe delivery. Couples have come forward seeking to adopt and implant some of the babies, a proposal that carries with it some grave risks. The little ones who are abandoned by their parents will eventually begin to deteriorate and die a natural death. This is far preferable to performing unethical and immoral research on them for the benefit of others. Consider this: In a hospital ward full of comatose patients who appear unable to survive, should scientists be allowed to kill them in order to do research on their organs and tissues because they aren't expected to live?

The practice of in vitro fertilization should be prohibited. Some say that horse is out of the barn. In this hedonistic society, that may well be true. In any case, parents should not be allowed to engender more children than they are willing to implant. Elizabeth Dole is No Jesse Helms - Media speculation is growing that pro-life, pro-U.S. Constitution, pro-U.S. sovereignty Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) may decide not to seek re-election. Spokesmen for Senator Helms deny these reports and we hope and pray that he will run again. Republican leaders reportedly have talked about Elizabeth Dole running for the seat if Helms retires. (The Dallas Morning News 6/24/01) Mrs. Dole is originally from North Carolina. Her short-lived campaign for the Republican presidential nomination should be enough to convince Party leaders to stop efforts to recruit her. Mrs. Dole s pro-abortion-choice views and lack of substance on critical issues make her incapable of filling Senator Helms very big shoes.

British Physician Does About-Face on Abortion-Breast Cancer Link - In an August 14, 2000 issue of The Times of London, British Dr. Thomas Stuttaford authored an article entitled, "Can Abortions Be Linked to Breast Cancer?" in which he reassured British women that abortion is a safe procedure. He declared that, As yet there is no evidence of a causative link between abortion and breast cancer.

Less than a year later, on May 17, 2001, Dr. Stuttaford authored another article for The Times in which he reversed his position. The article, "Fresh Line of Attack", pointed out that, Breast cancer is diagnosed in 33,000 women in the U.K. each year; of these, an unusually high proportion had an abortion before eventually starting a family. Such women are up to four times more likely to develop breast cancer.

A report by the Royal Statistical Society shows that a termination of pregnancy interrupts the cellular changes that occur in the breast during pregnancy. (Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer Press Release 6/19/01; Phone: (toll free) 1-877-803-0102 E-Mail: response@abortionbreastcancer.com).

Is History Repeating Itself? - Does Anyone Else Hear Ominous Echoes? asks Penny Pullen in the June 25 issue of Life Advocacy Briefing. After weeks of debate in Germany over the ethics of research using cells from human embryos, writes Associated Press (AP) reporter Burt Herman, a state governor is pushing the issue by allowing scientists to use imported embryonic stem cells. The sacrificed babies cells, he reports, are to be imported from Israel. That s right, Israel.

Parents of Teens WAKE UP! - Human Papilloma Virus (genital warts) has reached epidemic proportions among women. The sexually transmitted disease now infects more than half of all women who have been sexually active for several years, according to a study by Dr. Barbara Moscicki, a researcher at the University of California-San Francisco, whose findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 6/20/01. Her report said, The risk of acquiring HPV is actually quite high. A woman s lifetime risk is around 70 percent. Human Papilloma Virus is responsible for most cases of cervical cancer.

Planned Parenthood sex-education programs promote the use of condoms and birth control pills to teens. Neither condoms nor pills can protect girls and women from the transmission of HPV or numerous other serious or incurable sexually transmitted diseases. Parents get the facts. Pro-Abortion Catholics Running the Senate - As Catholic Church leaders attempt to stop experiments that kill embryonic babies, Catholics in the U.S. Senate are doing everything they can to undermine pro-life initiatives. The American Life League, in a press release (6/6/01), said that pro-abortion Catholics are now in charge of the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, (D-SD) is a pro-abortion Catholic. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), another pro-abortion Catholic, is now chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee who has said he will use his power to block the appointment of pro-life judges to federal courts. Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), who chairs the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in the Senate, and Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, are both dedicated to advancing the pro-abortion cause. (The Washington Times, 6/7/01). How do these people get away with calling themselves Catholics when their public statements and actions give scandal to the Church?
