The American people understand the implications of the cloning of human beings and the vast majority of us are strongly opposed to it, not to mention frightened at the spectre raised at the possibility that it might happen.

The outcome of the debate about whether or not to ban human cloning is certain to affect the fate of humanity for all time! As of May 6, 2002, the following 31 U.S. Senators had sponsored the genuine ban on human cloning (S. 1899), including lead sponsor Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) (in order of state): Shelby (R-AL), Sessions (R-AL), Murkowski (AK), Hutchinson (R-AR), Kyl (R-AZ), Allard (R-CO), Grassley (R-IA), Craig (R-ID), Crapo (R-ID), Fitzgerald (R-IL, McConnell (R-KY), Bunning (R-KY), Landrieu (D-LA), Lott (R-MS), Bond (R-MO), Burns (R-MT), Hagel (R-NE), Ensign (R-NV), Gregg (R-NH), Robert Smith (R-NH), Helms (R-NC), DeWine (R-OH), Voinovich (R-OH), Nickles (R-OK), Inhofe (R-OK), Santorum (R-PA), Gramm (R-TX), Enzi (R-WY), Thomas (R-WY), and Bennett (R-UT).

CLONE AND KILL BILLS 
A total of 17 senators have sponsored various "clone and kill" bills. On May 1, 2002, Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) introduced the latest such bill, S. 2439. He has twelve cosponsors (in order of state): Feinstein (D-CA), Boxer (D-CA), Miller (D-GA), Inouye (D-HI), Durbin (D-IL), Harkin (D-IA), Mikulski (D-MD), Kennedy (D-MA), Corzine (D-NJ), Clinton (D-NY), Thurmond (R-SC), and Hatch (R-UT).

Senator Harkin has also introduced his own clone and kill bill (S. 1893), which includes among its cosponsors Senator Harry Reid (D-NV).

On April 9, 2002, Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) introduced a bill (S. 2076) that would permit human cloning except "for the purpose of creating a cloned human being" – language that would not only allow human embryo farms, but also would have the legal effect of allowing human clones to develop for months before being killed. (Read "Dorgan-Johnson Bill Would Allow Implant and Abort Cloning"). Senators Tim Johnson (D-SD) and Mark Dayton (D-MN.) have cosponsored this bill.

Nation is More Pro-Life Than Press Admits 
Gary Bauer, who heads Campaign for Working Families, reported yesterday that CBS News just completed a poll on America’s attitude toward abortion, "but you won’t hear Dan Rather talk about it. Why? Because the data once again punctures the myth that American voters are ‘pro-choice’." Gary points out that there is a working majority in the country composed of people who are either clearly pro-life or who favor tighter restrictions, evidenced by the poll which revealed that thirty-one percent of those surveyed believe abortion should be generally available, thirty percent think it should be prohibited, and thirty-seven percent are in the conflicted middle, believing abortion should be allowed but only under strict limits. Of course, we know that members of the media are largely pro-abortion and survey results that are positive for the cause of life are, predictably, underreported.

We agree with Gary that the poll results reflect clear movement on the part of the American people toward the pro-life point of view. We also echo his sentiments regarding so-called "pro-life" politicians who seek our support at election time but, failing strong, principled leadership from pro-life groups and individuals, can be expected to continue to put the life issues on the legislative back burner. Suspected Sexual Abuse of Minors Must Be Reported 
When a minor requests condoms, birth control pills, a chemical or surgical abortion or any other "reproductive health" service, the clinic, agency, nurse, doctor, teacher, counselor, etc. must report instances of suspected child abuse to child protective services or other governmental authority designated by state law. Minor girls seeking such services are often the victims of statutory rape perpetrated by adult males. Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Federation, school-based clinics and others are in apparent violation of the law when they fail to report suspected sexual abuse perpetrated on minors who seek their services.
