Alan Simpson Says We Have "Rocks for Brains"
A former U.S. Senator from Wyoming, Alan Simpson, in a column that appeared in the Washington Post (6/16/03), described pro-life Republicans as "steely-eyed zealots trying to inflict their personal views on others." Such people, Mr. Simpson says, must "have rocks for brains" if they believe the conflict over abortion is ever going to be resolved, reports Ken Connor in Family Research Council's 6/16 edition of Washington Update.

Alan Simpson is a pro-abortion member of the board of the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, a group that has been trying for over ten years without success, to have the pro-life plank stricken from the Republican National Platform. He is a key figure in the new effort by a group called the Republican Unity Coalition, the principal organizers of which are Charles Francis, the homosexual brother of Jim Francis, a close personal friend of President Bush, and Mary Cheney, a self-described lesbian and the daughter of Vice-President Dick Cheney. The Republican Unity Coalition, with Mr. Simpson's help, seeks to make the Republican National Platform neutral on issues homosexual activists care about. Currently, the Republican Platform endorses "the traditional definition of "marriage" as the legal union of one man and one woman" and states, "we believe that federal judges and bureaucrats should not force states to recognize other living arrangements as marriages. The Platform further states Republican Party support for the Defense of Marriage Act and also, "we do not believe sexual preference should be given special legal protection or standing in law."

In a little more than a year, RNC/Life and our friends in the pro-life/pro-family coalition will go to the Republican National Convention in New York to once again battle against the forces represented by Alan Simpson, the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition and the Republican Unity Coalition. They are powerful, heavily funded, and have friends in very high places.

Our response will continue to be the expectation that the majority of Republicans want our Platform to continue to call for respect for innocent human life and support for traditional marriage and the family as the cornerstone of a stable society.

Rep. Akin Introduces Parental Rights Bill
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) has introduced H.R. 2444, the Parent's Right to Know Act, requiring that written notice be given to parents before contraceptive drugs or devices are dispensed to their minor children. For years, Planned Parenthood clinics among other taxpayer-funded "family planning" agencies have been prohibited from notifying parents when their minor children ask for various forms of birth control. Thanks to Congressman Akin (phone: 202/202/225-2561; fax: 202/225-2563) for raising awareness that because of federal government policies, American children who are not-yet fully grown are being given powerful chemicals with unknown consequences to their physical health, without their parents' knowledge or consent. Parents bear the responsibility for the physical, emotional, and psychological well being of their minor children. The government has no business usurping parental authority in these matters while leaving the parents to clean up the mess resulting from sexual promiscuity, sexually-transmitted disease (some incurable), depression, pregnancy, abortion -- and the list goes on.

Please ask your member of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 2444.

Effort Underway to Restore Funding to UNFPA
the United Nations Fund for Population Activities, which supports coercive population control activities in foreign countries such as China's "one-child" forced abortion policy, has been prevented from receiving federal funding since the Reagan years, when the Kemp-Kasten amendment to the State Department Authorization Bill became law. This year, in an effort to restore UNFPA funding, Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY) managed to get his amendment revoking the ban passed in the House Committee on International Relations. The measure will likely be debated in the House after the July 4th recess. Please ask your member of Congress to vote NO on the Crowley Amendment!
