PRO-LIFE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS HELP STOP LEGAL ABORTION IN URUGUAY
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) together with Reps. Mike Pence (R-IN), Todd Akin (R-MO), Steve King (R-IA), Jo Ann Davis (R-VA), and Joe Pitts (R-PA), all pro-life stalwarts, sent letters to Uruguay’s senators urging them not to "make the same costly mistake" America made 31 years ago and "legalize the violent murder of unborn children."

The Associated Press in a story by Jim Abrams (5/11/04) reported that, on May 5, the Uruguayan Senate rejected, by 17-13, a bill that, in addition to making abortion legal for women in the first trimester of pregnancy, would have promoted sex education, contraceptive distribution and maternal health care services. The bill had already passed Uruguay’s House of Representatives.

The story further reports that, even if the bill had passed, Jorge Batlle, president of Uruguay, said he would veto it. However, Congressman Smith and the others came under some criticism from some Uruguayan lawmakers and pro-abortion advocates who said they considered their letters to be meddling in the affairs of a foreign country.

Mr. Smith, who is a senior member of the House International Relations Committee, dismissed the criticism and said he regularly talks to foreign ministers and lawmakers from other countries on such issues as drug trafficking and torture. "Lawmakers have a duty to talk to each other on human rights."

He said it was also crucial to counter the efforts of pro-choice groups such as Planned Parenthood that approved of the legislation. "This was going to be their launching pad for abortion on demand in Latin America," he said.

Congressmen Smith, Pence, Akin, King, Davis and Pitts are solidly pro-life, but they are more than that. They are pro-actively pro-life, and we are grateful for their faithfulness and dedication to the noble cause we all share.

If you wish to make a call of appreciation to them, you can do so by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202/224-3121.

TEXAS CONGRESSIONAL RACE REVEALS DEMOCRAT'S HYPOCRISY
One of the top races in the country is being fought in Texas District 32. The seat is currently held by pro-life Rep. Pete Sessions. Redistricting has caused a contest between Congressman Sessions and another Member, Rep. Martin Frost, a pro-abortion Democrat who has spent 26 years in Congress voting for every liberal proposal in sight.

The Frost campaign sent out a beautiful, expensive full color brochure with a picture of a little blonde girl about four years old, smiling, sitting on a swing. Beneath the picture are the words "If just one child is saved . . ." The thrust of the ad points to Mr. Frosts efforts on behalf of children who are victims of sexual predators and his advocacy of the nationwide AMBER ALERT law, named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old who was kidnapped and murdered in 1996.

While his concern for the protection of children like Amber is commendable and shared by every decent person in the country, his words quoted in the ad: "If just one child is saved, then we have done our job," have a hollow ring. Because of his 26 years of votes for pro-abortion legislation and against pro-life measures, Martin Frost along with every other pro-abortion Member of Congress has contributed to the deaths of over 40 million babies.

Texans who live in Congressional District 32 should be aware that what you see isn’t always what you get.
