Human Embryonic Stem Cells Have "Propensity to Cause Tumors" An opinion editorial in The Orange County Register (7/18/05) by Philip H. Schwartz, Director of the National Human Neural Stem Cell Resource and Director of the Human Embryonic Stem Cell Culture Training Course at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, explained that, "All forms of stem-cell research are legal in this country and federal funds (i.e. taxpayer dollars) can be used for all forms with the exception that they cannot be used for creating more human embryonic stem cells by destroying more embryos (after a cut-off date of August 9, 2001)." He further pointed out that "the National Institutes of Health has funded a number of training courses, (one of which I run) to teach scientists how to conduct human embryonic stem-cell research." Besides growing the cells, Mr. Schwartz expressed his concern in the article that "a number of other biological characteristics of human embryonic stem cells absolutely must be addressed. For example, among the major considerations in using human embryonic stem cells to treat human disease is their propensity to form tumors, a fact not well known by the general public." It is also not generally known that human embryonic stem cells have not produced even one treatment or cure for any disease or condition, while over 65 different treatments and cures have been brought about through the use of non-embryonic stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood, placentas, and adult bone marrow, among other sources. What is the reason for the dearth of accurate and truthful information about this subject? Why are the media, Hollywood elites and political liberals (along with some Republicans) promoting the killing of human embryos for their stem cells? The reason is simple. If the human embryo is acknowledged as a unique individual human being entitled to respect and protection under the law, legal abortion in this country is doomed. It's not about curing disease. If they wanted to cure disease, they would promote spending federal money on non-embryonic stem cell research that is proving to be successful. It's all about abortion.
Susan's husband, Jason Torres, stayed by her side every night during those three months. Her parents and other family members rallied to support Jason and their other child, 2-year-old Peter, who has been cared for by his grandparents during the ordeal. Their love and devotion to both Susan the mother and Susan the baby have been a remarkable testimony to their faith in God as the Author of all life and their acceptance of His divine will. Doctors removed Mrs. Torres from life support on August 3 with the consent of her husband, after she received the final sacrament of the Roman Catholic Church. Jason had to quit his job because he felt he needed to be with his wife during this time. The hospital bills are enormous and according to press reports, the family has to pay tens of thousands of dollars each week that insurance does not cover. A web site has been set up to help raise money for the family's mounting medical bills. Click here http://www.susantorresfund.org/ if you would like to help. | |
