Texas Joined by 17 States in Defending NH Law
The office of the Attorney General of Texas, Greg Abbott, announced Monday that Texas filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court, defending the constitutionality of New Hampshire's parental consent statute. Seventeen states joined Texas: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming. The case will be heard when the Supreme Court resumes its proceedings in the fall. If Judge John Roberts is confirmed, as is expected, he will rule on the case. So far, additional amicus briefs have been filed by the Rutherford Institute, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Thomas More Society, New Hampshire Representative and bill author (HB-763) Kathleen Souza, the Eagle Forum Education and Legal Defense Fund, Liberty Counsel and the United States government have all filed amicus briefs in support of the New Hampshire parental consent law in the case known as Ayotte vs. Planned Parenthood . | |
