If Republican leaders want to see blue states turn to red, they should pray for the reversal of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court.

At this point, that is the last thing on their prayer list, at least for some in the hierarchy of the Republican Party. Nina Easton, in a November 17, 2005 Boston Globe column entitled "GOP leader fears backlash if Roe v. Wade is overturned," reported that Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia, who chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) through the 2002 election, said that if the Supreme Court threw out Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that established that abortion rights were protected by the Constitution, "you're going to have a lot of very nervous suburban candidates."

At a breakfast gathering of reporters, Davis said Republicans have a political cushion with voters as long as Roe is intact, according to Easton. Currently, “you can be pro-life and no one feels that’s a threat to someone having to make a difficult decision,” Davis said. Furthermore, in commenting on the possibility that the Court could address whether there is a constitutional right to abortion, Davis said, “It’s nice to make a stand” against abortion, when “it’s not a real bullet, it’s more theoretical.”

Consider the fact that the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision, if it ever happens, will not end legalized abortion in America. What it will do is restore the right of the people, through their elected representatives in state legislatures across the land, to act to regulate, restrict, or prohibit abortion without interference by the courts.

If and when that happens, there will be a massive movement in every state in the nation to restore legal protection to unborn babies. There will be a mobilization of pro-life activists unlike anything seen before. Candidates for office and elected officials will be measured according to their support for the pro-life cause. While there will certainly be a tremendous battle between the pro-life and pro-abortion elements in our society, we know that we will prevail because we have done so for 33 years, because we have made the Republican Party the majority Party through our consistent activism and participation in the political process, and because people who support the killing of the unborn are no match for us. We have proven that time and again.

Republicans who understand the dynamics of pro-life politics will realize the benefit of overturning of Roe v. Wade. Republicans who advocate for the pro-life cause and join in the battle will win elections. And that will turn the blue states red.

Everyone at RNC/Life extends to you our very best wishes for a blessed Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year. We wish to thank you for your support and encouragement and for keeping the cause of life close to your heart. May God richly bless you and yours and graciously reward all of your efforts to bring about true justice and mercy in America.
