Life-Issues Legislation on Capitol Hill

RU-486 Suspension and Review Act (H.R.1079 and S. 511)
Introduced in the House by Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) and in the Senate by Jim DeMint (R-SC), this bill calls for the immediate suspension of the FDA's approval of the deadly abortion drug RU-486. Called "Holly's Law" (named for a young girl who died in California from using RU-486, the bill also directs the General Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a six month independent review of the approval process the FDA used to declare the abortion pill RU-486 "safe and effective."

The FDA gave approval to the drug during the Clinton administration under an expedited procedure designed for drugs to treat life-threatening conditions, such as cancer, AIDS and conditions related to bio-terrorist attacks. The fingerprints of the abortion industry are all over that decision, since pregnancy is a natural and normal condition, not an illness, and certainly not a life-threatening condition. Three American women have died using RU-486 and six hundred cases of complications have been reported to the FDA since the 2000 approval when many of the safety precautions the FDA had previously recommended were dropped.

Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act (S.51 and H.R. 356)
Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) and Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) have introduced this bill which will require abortion providers to notify a mother who is seeking an abortion 20 weeks after conception or later of the growing medical evidence that the unborn child in her womb can feel severe and extreme pain during an abortion procedure.

The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act states that, 20 weeks or more after fertilization/conception, a mother seeking an abortion must be given information on the pain her baby will experience and be offered anesthesia for the child.

The idea that an unborn baby can feel pain seems elementary to most of us. After all, we know that babies in the womb can hear the voices of their mother and father, they listen to music, they respond to stimuli and move away from medical instruments that invade their space. But the abortion industry has forever sold the idea that somehow these babies don't feel anything. You can decapitate and dismember them and, so what?

Now, Senator Brownback and Congressman Smith, along with many co-sponsors in the Senate and House, are pointing out the extreme brutality of abortion by introducing this legislation, which brings home the abortion reality so that mothers will be helped to think hard before they take the next step.

Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (H.R.748)
This bill was introduced by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) with 105 original co-sponsors. The Act would require abortionists to notify parents before performing abortions on under-age girls who have been transported to another state from one that has a parental notification or consent law. It provides that anyone who evades a state's parental involvement law by knowingly taking a minor across state lines for an abortion be subject to a fine and/or imprisonment.
