MISSOURIANS TO VOTE ON HUMAN CLONING Voters in Missouri are being intentionally misled by promoters of a Constitutional Amendment (Amendment 2) that will appear on the ballot on Election Day, November 7th. Advocates for cloning and killing human embryos and harvesting their stem cells are behind the campaign for the Amendment, a 2,000-word initiative that begins with the sentence “No person may clone or attempt to clone a human being.” Reading that sentence without reading the rest of the Amendment would lead a person to think it’s an anti-cloning measure. Not true. The people responsible for writing the Amendment have cleverly disguised their real intentions by defining a human clone as one who is implanted in a woman’s uterus and allowed to grow and develop until birth. The Amendment would prohibit a cloned human embryo from being implanted. Instead, the Amendment legalizes somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), the process by which Dolly the sheep and other animals have been cloned, as long as the cloned human embryo is killed for his or her stem cells which would then be used for scientific experiments. The Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, founded by Jim Stowers, Jr. and his wife Virginia, and endowed with an estimated $2 billion, has already spent $24.5 million to pass the anti-life Amendment 2. Prominent Republicans including Governor Matt Blunt and former Senator John Danforth support the clone-to-kill Amendment, a profound disappointment to pro-life voters in Missouri. Missouri is a pro-life state. Missouri citizens would never pass a clone-to-kill measure, and they won’t as long as we can expose the deceptive tactics being used by its promoters and reveal their true intentions. Remember, somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is a method used to engender cloned animals. It has not been accomplished yet in humans. If scientists are free to experiment with human cloning, some day a cloned human embryo — a human organism — a human being — may come in to existence. Missourians must not legalize SCNT!
