The Ann Arbor-based Thomas More Law Center has filed suit in federal court in Lansing on behalf of the Lansing Guild of the Catholic Medical Association, Flint-Area Right To Life and Right To Life Lifespan, claiming that Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has discriminated against residents who oppose embryonic stem cell research.

Granholm, who wants to do away with Michigan’s restrictions on research that requires the killing of human embryos, has a link on her state Web site that encourages citizens to sign a petition asking the state Legislature to pass bills that would lift those restrictions.

The Law Center says Granholm refused requests from its clients to place their own petition on the taxpayer-funded Web site. (The Associated Press, 8/9/07)

Wisconsin Right to Life issued an August 9 press release entitled “Listen Up, Wisconsin Taxpayers!” “Here’s a Sampling of the Abortions You Will Pay for Under ‘Healthy Wisconsin’”

Under the Senate Democrats’ “Healthy Wisconsin” health insurance plan, Wisconsin taxpayers will be forced to pay for the abortion of any Wisconsin woman, including:

  1. The married woman who isn’t sure who the father of her baby is and doesn’t want her husband to know she has a boyfriend.
  2. The woman who is having her third abortion.
  3. The woman who doesn’t want the inconvenience of a baby to interfere with her career plans.
  4. The woman who doesn’t want to appear in her bikini with stretch marks.
  5. Any other Wisconsin woman, for any reason, at any time during pregnancy, for as many times as she would choose to have one with no restrictions whatsoever.

There is no doubt about it. The Democrats intend to use the issue of expanded health insurance for the poor to pass health care laws at the state and national levels that would force us into participation in abortion through our tax dollars. Please be vigilant. Is this happening in your state?

Republican Party activists will participate in the Iowa Straw Poll tomorrow and most of the Republican presidential candidates are desperately vying for the pro-life vote. Rudy Giuliani, who is pro-abortion and John McCain, whose record is mixed, both plan to skip the straw poll. Mitt Romney has been working overtime to convince Iowa’s pro-lifers that he has reformed and, after a lifetime of support for abortion-on-demand, he is now pro-life. Except that he is not. He is not because he supports research that requires the killing of human embryos, as long as they are “left over” from in vitro fertilization treatments. Ron Paul has a mixed record due to his Libertarian views. Sam Brownback, Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee and Tom Tancredo are all pro-life. If one of them manages to secure the majority of the pro-life vote, he could win the straw poll and change the complexion of the race.

Never forget that you were once an embryo!
